The Venice Marathon – 25th October 2009
Starting from the magic and the splendour of the “Riviera” many Venitian location will be animated by an enthusing “historical race”: we are talking about the Venice Marathon, which is much more than a simple sport competition, that this year will take place on the 25th of October. Many says that the Venice Marathon differs by many others similiar sport event because of its magnificent route. The competition starts in Stra, a nearby city of Venice where the famous Villa Pisani is located, and ends in “Riva Sette Martiri” the street which runs closeby San Marco Square and from where you can see the whole Venitian Lagoon.
The first 20 Kilometers of the journey take place in the “Brenta Riviera” and skirt the navigable canal. The landscape is tipycal of the Venitian countryside, rich in vegetation and abundant with Venitian villas from the 18th Century. The Marathon crosses then the towns of Marghera and Mestre, and arrives in Venice on the “Ponte della Libertà” (a straight 4 KM bridge which arrives in the Island of Venice). The race continues in the Venice port and enters the historic Venice
centre in its last few kilometers. The competitors will run on the “Fondamenta delle Zattere” by the side of the “Canale della Giudecca” (a part of the Venice Lagoon between Venice Island and the Island of the Giudecca). The athlets will arrive at the “Punta della Dogana” (by the Basilica of the Salute) from there they will be able to cross the Gran Canal thanks to a floating bridge (160 meters long and prepared expressly for the Venice Marathon), and by running alongside San Marco Square and the Doges Palace will arrive at the finishing line in Riva dei Sette Martiri.
